La Gran Sabana - Canaima!

La Gran Sabana (the Great Savannah) is a unique place in the world. It occupies about half of Canaima National Park, which was established in 1962. In 1975, Canaima was tripled in size to 30,000 km2, making it the largest national park in the world.

Canaima National Park became a world heritage site in 1994 in recognition of its extraordinary scenery, geology and biology.

La Gran Sabana is in the southern part of the Bolívar state (Estado Bolívar), approximately 1400 km from Caracas. The area has a tropical, humid climate with an average temperature of 28 ºC but at night it can easily drop to 13 ºC. It is covered by extensive, rolling grass savannas from which arise the famous "Tepuys", of which most famous is Roraima. The tepuys (flat-topped mountains) are the oldest geological formation in the world.

Tepuy Roraima (two thousand million years old!!), one of the most massive and highest mesas in the region, sits at the tripartite border of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, (the author of Sherlock Holmes) fascinated by the descriptions of explorers such as Im Thurm, wrote in 1912 what is considered to be one of the best science fiction novels ever written "The Lost World" in which dinosaurs are still living on an isolated plateau in the Amazon Basin.

Recently, tourism and especially eco-tourism, has made La Gran Sabana the first choice for travellers seeking adventure in the remote areas of its unique geography.

Magnificent Tepuys, mighty rivers and inmense waterfalls are in the area. And of course, the Angel's falls, the world's highest waterfall!
